Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It Steve’s Bookshelf I am starting a new section on my blog called Steve’s Bookshelf. With the shelter in place order just beginning, most of us have a lot more time to catch up on reading, myself included. I have decided to start blogging about the books that have made a difference in my business or my life. Quick note: in this section of the blog I am including links so you can buy the books I mention. The links I have used are not affiliate links. These are […]

What’s Wrong With Google My Business? After the initial fallout from the Covid-19 virus, business owners started noticing there were serious problems with Google My Business. These problems included: Customers not being able to leave reviews on Google. Businesses not being able to answer Google reviews. Businesses unable to change hours or schedule on GMB. What Going Viral Means The other day I received change from a purchase, and one of the bills had a Where’s George stamp on it. I hadn’t seen a stamped bill like this in some time. I remember when they first started showing up in the late 1990s. Where’s George?  https://www.wheresgeorge.com/ is an idea that was created by Hank Eskin in 1998. It’s a really fun site that tracks the movement of US currency, mostly $1 bills. It’s a great site to teach children about how money moves around in our country, and in some cases, the world. Where’s George? has […]

What Is Online Reputation Management? Quick Important Update: Due to Covid-19, Google has disabled Google reviews and the ability to answer them. This started around March 23, 2020. Until Google lifts the action and allows reviews, I would recommend being very conservative in your actions on Google My Business. I will update as soon as this changes. And, Does It Matter to Your Business? A frequent question I get asked is, “What is online reputation management?” This is a great question. It’s also one that cannot be answered in a few words. Online Reputation Management is protecting your online presence […]

How It All Started The Origin Story Starting over at the age of 46. This seemed terrifying, and it was. My now ex-wife said she wanted a divorce. We had grown apart, and I agreed. We had spent almost 12 years building a building maintenance business to a workforce that was at one time 49 strong. At the time of the divorce, we had a workforce of 23 and it was still a very profitable business. I had suggested that she take the business so she could support our son without having to work an outside job. So, here I […]

Think SEO is Dead? Think Again. SEO is more relevant than ever. When it comes to talking about SEO, every so often, and it’s getting quicker all of the time due to our fast news cyclic lives, some guru says SEO is dead. Is SEO relevant? Yes, now more so than ever. If you are a small business owner, this can be confusing. Having a small business marketing firm that deals with web presence, I can say that I spend a lot of time educating small business owners that SEO is relevant to their business. Did you Know? According to […]

My Feelings on Franchise Businesses You are probably reading this blog because you have read my book Business Websites That Convert, and you want to see what I have to say about franchise businesses. My Personal Experience By now you probably realize that I do not like, nor do I advocate the franchise model, especially for service businesses. I wasn’t joking about what I have said. I did learn all the bad things that can happen in a franchise business the hard way. I have had an existing service based company since 2001. I had been approached by several companies […]
